Weit über 20 Longplayer-Alben plus diverse Compilations hatte er alleine seit 1957 veröffentlicht, darunter Klassiker wie ,Live At The Regal‘ (1965) und ,Live In Cook County Jail‘ (1971), als sich ein neuer Weg andeutete: Neben der Konkurrenz vom weißen Rock & Roll und der Rock-Szene der 60er-Jahre, raubte ihm auch die Bürgerrechtsbewegung viele Fans: Junge Afroamerikaner wollten keinen „Blues unterdrückter Sklaven“ mehr hören, sie konvertierten zu Funk, Soul und anderer Black Music.
